Instant Mashed Potato Play Dough

This recipe came to be because I was searching for a toddler safe play dough for my 16 month old son. Pinterest is full of no-cook and taste safe play dough recipes. The problem with about 90% of them is that they are they are not safe to play with and definitely not taste safe. Raw flour comes undergoes little processing other than milling, It is grown in fields and can be contaminated with bacteria through water, soil, and animal waste. This is not bacteria you want to mess with either, we are talking about E. Coli, salmonella, and even listeria possible. This recipe is easy and yields a very safe dough for older babies and toddlers to play with.

Notes from the Food Scientist

  • Make this right before you intend for your child to play with it. You can refrigerate it for a day or two, but it’s best to use it right away.
  • I prefer to use an electric mixer, but you can do it by hand too. If you mix by hand, you can let your kids help knead it a once the dough starts to form.
  • Adding the food coloring directly to the water works best, but it can be hard to judge how much you will need. Start with several drops added to the water, then add more to the dough later if needed.
  • If the consistency is not what you desire, you can easily adjust it by adding more potato flakes or water accordingly.
